The Scholar’s Green

Green lowball cocktail

Paper Title: Angrist, N, K Winseck, H Patrinos, and J Graff Zivin, “The Effects of Human Capital Accumulation on Climate Beliefs and Behaviors.” Review of Economics and Statistics, forthcoming.

Cocktail Pairing: The Scholar’s Green

Rationale: This paper leverages compulsory schooling laws in Europe to demonstrate that additional years of general education increase pro-climate beliefs, behaviors, and policy preferences. The eponymous color of the Scholar’s Green represents green values, and the sage symbolizes the wisdom that comes from education. The mix of European ingredients is an homage to our data source. The Scholar’s Green is a spirit-forward cocktail of my own invention with herbal and earthy undertones along with the brightness of citrus.

Recipe: Scholars Green

  • 2oz London Dry Gin

  • 1oz Izarra Verte

  • 1oz Benedictine

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice ~ half lemon

  • 2-3 fresh sage leaves

  • 1 tsp demerara sugar

  • 3 dash Serrano bitters

  • Club Soda (optional)

  • Garnish: Sage (torched)

  1. In a shaker, gently muddle the sage leaves with sugar.

  2. Add the gin, izarra, benedictine, lemon juice, and bitters to the shaker.

  3. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously until the mixture is well chilled.

  4. Strain into a lowball or whiskey glass with large ice cube.

  5. Top Off (Optional): Add a splash of club soda for a lighter, more effervescent drink.
